Type:                       Full-time annual exempt position with some benefits

Supervises:             Exempt and non-exempt staff

Overall operational and strategic plan execution responsibility of the National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum (NMHFM) non-profit entity. This includes visioning, managing the budget, financial performance, exhibits, collections, staff, community affairs, grant applications and other duties as required.

Essential Functions

  • Operate a national-level museum
  • Report to the Board of Directors on the state of the operations and mission/vision
  • Develop annual budgets and recommendations to maintain a sustainable operation
  • Manage day-to-day operations of a 25,000-square-foot facility and a remote historical site
  • Budget, plan and execute an annual Hall of Fame Induction Banquet as a fundraising event
  • Collaborate with the Board to develop and champion NMHFM strategic plans and specific goals
  • Expand the museum’s presence locally, regionally and nationally
  • Recommend timelines and resources needed to achieve goals
  • Continually enhance museum’s communications and community outreach
  • Adhere to best practices in governance and administration
  • Be a leading member within the community of Leadville, Lake County and Colorado

Leadership & Management

  • Actively collaborate with the mineral production industry including universities, societies and mineral production companies
  • Actively engage and energize NMHFM volunteers, board members, event committees, partnering organizations, and donors to achieve success in achieving goals and strategic plans
  • Recruit, hire, develop, lead and retain the NMHFM employees

Marketing, Fundraising & Communications

  • Build relationships and partnerships with related institutions, funding organizations, donors, and political and community leaders
  • Research and identify prospects and seek financial support from individual, foundation, corporate, and government sources via grant writing and other means
  • Create and manage communications for new exhibits, web presence and brand recognition
  • Publish and communicate program results with an emphasis on the successes of the local, regional and national programs


Work Requirements

  • Must have a valid driver’s license
  • Must pass a background check and drug test
  • Must be able to lift and carry items up to 25 lbs.
  • Reasonable fitness is required to live and work at 10,000 feet of elevation
  • May occasionally be required to climb a ladder or stepstool

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in the museum field (curation, preservation, ethics, management and legal)
  • Master’s in museum studies, public history, or a related field
  • Some knowledge of the past and present state of the mining industry
  • Experience working in a non-profit organization
  • Skills managing personnel, finances, and museum operations
  • Enthusiasm for and a record of success in fundraising
  • Willingness to be the face of the organization.
  • Negotiate effectively with board and outside entities
